Looking to start our own travel softball team

Hi there,
I'm looking to start a travel softball team for girls 10u and 12u. Can anybody help me, give me tips on what I need to get started? I am not new to softball, played for college even but I'm not sure how to get into tournaments, team liability/injury insurance, etc.

My daughter is looking for a travel team within about an hour of Charlottesville, Va for the 2013 season. She is a 99er currently playing on a 12U team and will be one of the only girls from the team that has to move up. I know this is a bit early, but I'm trying to plan for fall tryouts.

Starting 10U travel team in Northeast Indiana

I have been coaching softball for a while now and my record is currently 23-3 and we have won every tournament entered. To show my way with kids I have maintained this record through football (16-0) and baseball (36-4). I have recently decided after I was going to lose some girls in league, to take them on the road. I would like to have try-outs soon for some girls who are willing to travel and make some state wide tournaments.

starting a 16u and 18u teams

we are going to try to put together a couple of local teams to play 6 or 8 travel tournaments next year. What I need is a copy of a sign up form and an evaluation form for tryouts. we have a good core and will need to add a couple of players. The costs are just to much for some local girls so we thought we could put together a competative team so the parents won't have to morgage their home.

Okay, there is a very detailed report that was created that covers just about everything you might need to know relating to starting a travel softball team. It's at StartATravelTeam.com ... you do have to give a name and email address but I can assure you that you won't be sold ANYTHING.

I got that report a couple of months ago and other than asking me what I thought of the thing I haven't been emailed at all.

Hi Carol,

You can go to softballtournaments.com to find tournaments in your area. Also check eteamz by going to this link http://www.eteamz.com/fastpitch/tournaments/

Regarding liability insurance, we simply asked our rec program if we could use their insurance since our team is based out of our town, and a few of our players come from within our town. They had no problem, and provided us with the insurance cert. It certainly saved us some money.

This may or may not work for you, but if not, ask the local rec program or another travel coach to refer you to their insurance company.

Finally, Mark made a great suggestion...talk to a 16u or 18u travel coach. The coaches with Team Indiana would be a great start. Here is their link. http://www.teamindiana.softballone.com/

I hope you have some great luck. Coaching a travel team is alot of hard work and a big time commitment, but it is also a ton of fun.

How to Start You Own Travel Team

It's hard to describe exactly how to start but here are a few things to think about:

- Affiliation (ASA, PONY, USSA)
- Staff and Manager
- Planning a budget (very important)
- Uniforms
- How you are doing to recruit athletes
- What tournament you are going to do
- Equipments
- Etc.

My best advice, seek out the advice of local 16U - 18U coach that has been around for a while (not in competition with you) and ask him. Most coaches I know are super nice and will be glad to help you out.
