how many people allowed in dugout
by: Anonymous

I agree with the above comments - only the head coach, assistant coaches, and scorekeeper should be in the dugout. And I will also tell you this from personal experience: you as a coach need to make this clear to the parents before you ever play your first tournament of the season! We have been on teams where some of the mom's sit in the dugout only to fuss at their child once they come off the field.

Our scorekeeper actually sits right outside the dugout entrance, so she is accessible to the coaches but she's not in the way of the girls. We have one coach who stays in the dugout to make sure the lineup is correct and to help the catcher get ready, or help in case a girl is hurt (band aids, ice, etc.), then we have our head coach and our first base coach.

Our coach had a parent meeting early in the year and told us this: no parents in the dugout; no parents on the field when the girls are warming up; no parent is to ask about the batting lineup; no parent is to ask what position their child is playing in a particular inning. Sounds harsh? Maybe...but it has taken a LOT of stress off of our coach...and he also said if you don't like his rules, you do not have to play for him. A couple of parents did not like his style but the rest of us were actually relieved.

My biggest advice to you is this: take control of your team from the start. If you do not want more than 3 people in the dugout, then make it so. The parents will respect you and it will make things a whole lot easier for everybody.

who is allowed in the dugout in the mind of most umpires
by: Brittany

Okay I have been playing softball for about ten years now. The only people that are allowed to be in the dugout while you are playing a game is the players and your coaches and a scorekeeper if you have one. If the umpire sees anybody other then players, coaches, and a scorekeeper or the occasional parent that needs to say something to their child he is going to stop the game (usually) and tell you to get them out of the dugout.

Hope I helped you out a little bit.

Coaching staff only
by: Coach Frisbee

Other than players, there should only be coaching staff. Three is best, that way there is still one in the dugout during defense.

Dugout
by: Amanda

On the teams I play for, the only people allowed in the dugout are players and coaching staff. I even feel a little bad about sitting in the dugout with my sister's 12U team--that I help manage--while keeping the scorebook. I take up space and it is hectic, but they need someone to tell them when to hit, if they can go to the bathroom, and generally babysit while the coaches are coaching first and third.
I will say that parents can come in there if they have something to give the child, like water, then leave. Or if someone is injured, of course someone who can attend to the injury should be allowed in.
During school ball, we can't even have parents come up to the fence to talk to us. We have a line that we can't cross (our dugouts are open).
